Alkmaar is without any doubt the biggest cheese market in the world. People flock from all over to see the cheese auction and the antics of the runners.
Kath and I went to see the auction. There were so many people, we couldn't
get near the square where the cheeses are stacked to create a sea of gold.
I took this picture by holding my trusty old Nikon F3 high over my head
and hoping for the best.
It seems as if everything in this town is built around cheese. Girls
and women in wooden shoes and traditional dress, all with thick braids
of creamy yellow-blonde hair, walk around with plates of cheese samples.
If you haven't yet tasted Graskaas ... well, go to Alkmaar!
A postcard depicting Alkmaar's trade.
If you were going to choose a cheese capital, enchanting Alkmaar, established in 939, would win hands down. The Cheese Market is held every Friday between 10:00 a.m. and noon, from April to mid-September.
The acrobatics of the cheese carriers are a delight. Each team wears a hat with a different color hatband, showing the company they belong to. While you are in Alkmaar, you should also visit the Hans Brinker Museum and the Cheese Museum.
