                           largest rodent
                                 in the world
Do you know the Capybara, largest rodent in the world? We didn't either! Saw them for the first time in the big City Zoo in Buenos Aires and could not figure out what they were. Then we were very surprised to find one in South Africa!

      boys petting capy
No, it is not a hamster on steroids!

The boys only have eyes for the shy capybara at the Cango Wildlife Ranch at Outshoorn.
This photo is currently on a web site giving more details about these animals.

For instance, they are found in South America, south to Argentina, west to the Andes, and north to Panama. So this one is a visitor in South Africa! In Buenos Aires City Zoo, we saw at least 20 of them browsing, not kept in cages. We couldn't decide if they were very big jackrabbits, small gazelles or a cross between the two and something else!

      drawing of capy
A drawing of the capybara, from Sheryl's Capybara page. Note the webbed feet, small ears and almost non-existent tail. It has coarse hair and makes a sound like the call of a bird. Capys are vegetarian.
