Discovering Amsterdam by boat. These big boats criss-cross the canals.
Some of them are "hop on/hop off" so that you can tour the city the way you want
to, and get back on the boat when you have explored a certain corner to
your heart's content. I took the "Candlelit Tour", which takes you around the
city at night, with cheese and lovely kir or kir royale served
during the trip.
Amsterdam has several so-called "protected cityscapes", a term precisely defined by the Dutch Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act (e.g. the Nieuwmarktbuurt). In 1989 the Amsterdam city centre was recommended in its entirety (i.e. the whole area within the confinement of the Singelgracht) for inclusion in the list of "protected cityscapes". It is expected that the official legal status will be granted this year. (Info from here.) (Postcard: Unfortunately no info about the photographer)
