      Cleaning
      Cleaning canals.
This happens once a week or so. The canals are blocked, a boat picks up all the garbage and clean water is flushed through. Look at all those bicycles!

      lots and lots of cats
The "cat boat"! There is a special boat, opposite 40 Singel, where volunteers look after stray cats found in the city streets. The boat is completely covered with diamond mesh so the cats can't jump out. It is spacious and clean and the cats have the run of the place. Visitors enter through double doors to stop any would-be escapees. As you can see on this picture, the cats even have chairs all to themselves!

      Houses on both banks
      The Narrow Bridge (Magere Brug).
Water and bridges are the two things of vital importance to Amsterdam. The grachten allowed tradesmen to bring their wares to the city, and also helped to keep enemies out.
This picture shows Bridge 242: Amstel/Kerkstraat (Magere Brug, 1840, rest. 1934). This bridge is the most famous of Amsterdam double draw bridges. The span of this wooden bridge consists of 9 sections. (More info)
