Even though I had a pretty demanding course load as well as working a full time job, occasionally I found myself with nothing to do or just wanting to get out and meet people and do things. Man is a social animal and founded social organizations to fulfill this need for companionship and affiliation so I scurried off and joined several campus organizations.Phi Beta Lambda
Phi Beta Lambda is a general business organization that address the concerns of a wide range of business disciplines, from marketing and accounting to management and economics. I felt that this would give me somewhat greater exposure to business as a whole rather than specializing with my selected niche. Also, though I was interested in HR management I was working in a general management position that required me to draw on a wide range of skills to achieve the level of success that I was accustomed to.Over time my responsibility level grew and I was made recorder, and found myself taking on a leadership role by helping to organize local events such as speaking engagements by local businessmen, fund raising events, and the drive for the 'gold key' award.
In addition, I had the opportunity to successfully compete at the state level in Montgomery, Alabama in the category of Computer Applications. Testing involved detailed knowledge of applications as they pertain to business situations as well as general knowledge of computer systems and hardware. My trophy resides in the awards case at Jacksonville State University, Merrill Hall, College of Commerce and Business Administration.
Catholic Student Organization
I'm not going to get into my spiritual side very much or try and convert anybody but this is an organization that I belonged to and it is worthy of mention by me here. Its a toss-up which had been the cause of more wars: greed or religion, and I personally think that if people were a bit more tolerant this world would be a better place. After all, it strikes me as silly that people want to kill one another over their religion when one of the most cardinal tenets of most of the world's major religions is a variation of "don't kill people".Sigma Nu Fraternity
I saved this for last but it is not my any means least; my fraternity affiliation was one of the best things that I did while I was going to college (and afterwards as well). The media today is trying to create a hype about all fraternities being bad or out of control but this isn't the case. Generalizations about type of class or group are easy to make: my chosen field of human resource management has evolved in part because of this unfortunate aspect of human nature: typecasting.I got involved in the idea of actually joining a fraternity rather accidentally: a few friends were going through the university-supervised formal rush which promised to be a good chance for a brand-new freshman like myself to get out, meet new people, and eat for free on the inevitable snack food platters . Over the course of the week-long event I started to really get to know the brothers of my future chapter and decided that maybe I should give it a try.
I knew some of the obvious benefits of being in a greek organization such as peer recognition and the strong bonds that grew between myself and the brotherhood, but there were also a lot of things that were not so readily apparent. Sometimes it helped out being to able to talk about matters with someone that shares many of the same experiences, or the advice as which was the best professors and classes to take. Other times it just made college events more fun like 'painting up' for a football game or just sharing experiences in the company of friends. Striving to complete a house project, participating in sporting events, fund raisers, or working on one of our many philantrophy projects all served to reinforce the tenets of teamwork, organization, planning, and brotherhood.
Now that I have passed through the halls of higher learning the bonds of friendship and brotherhood have not been left behind....while I have gradually lost track of friends at work and school the fraternal bond survives.
