The General Staff of the Oriental Bloc of the FARC-EP informs
Hugo Chavez Frias, President of Venezuela and his government:
1. That on July 31 this year units belonging to the 10th Front in
the Department of Arauca received report of the clandestined landing of
an unidentified aeroplane in its zone of operations.
2. The General Staff of the Front ordered the comando of the Marquetalia
Company to advance to the location of the event to establish the identity
of the plane and its occupants.
3. In the operation the plane and 14 persons were captured while others
fled and as yet have not been located. The detained persons were moved
to various places for the duration of the investigation.
4. We have been at that work for more than four days and to date we
have the following information:
a) That the aeroplane was hijacked by some opponents of the government
of President Chavez and they were the ones who escaped when the guerrillas
of the FARC-EP arrived.
b) That the passengers are honourable working people and have nothing
to do with their captors.
5. We reiterate that we shall carry out the decisions of our National
Conferences of Guerrillas, Plenums of the Central General Staff and the
permanent leadership of the National Secretariat to maintain relations
of frienship, solidarity and mutual respect with our neighbours: Ecuador,
Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and Panama.
6. We are freeing unconditionally all the passengers, the plane and
its crew who will return to your country by various routes.
7. We, the peoples of Colombia and Venezuela, are united by the bolivarian
legacy and our duty is to co- operate mutually.
Mountains of the Eastern Plains. August 5, 1999.
